  • Pearl Ren, a doctoral candidate at a Beijing university, has a healthy volume of hair but is distressed about her naturally high hairline and widening down the middle parting. Further fueling her anxiety are the innumerable promotions of hair growth remedies embellished by beautiful models with flowing locks falling in glossy waves over their shoulders — down to their waist in many cases — and picture-perfect hairlines.

  • In this study, word dynamics, co-occurring phrases, and keyword frequency in the area of androgenetic alopecia were thoroughly analysed during a ten-year period. The study tracks changes in word usage, frequency, and context and identifies variations in the distribution and usage patterns of keywords, subjects, and co-occurring phrases using natural language processing techniques and graph theory-based approaches. The research reveals hidden linkages and patterns between diverse ideas, shedding light on the co-occurrence patterns of numerous phrases in the literature on androgenetic alopecia. The study emphasises the value of clearly visualising and disseminating findings to a large audience. In order to communicate the findings of the 10-year trend analysis to patrons, legislatures, and other pertinent audiences, data visualisation tools, infographics, and reports are used. This makes sure that the results are useful, effective, and easily accessible so that they can guide the creation of policies and decisions pertaining to androgenetic alopecia. The results of this study may have substantial ramifications for academics, medical professionals, policymakers, and other industry participants. The research can lead future research paths, prioritise research areas, and suggest areas that require additional examination by highlighting key research challenges and pointing out gaps in the study of androgenetic alopecia. Identifying emergent study issues, analysing the changing patt...

  • Sphingolipids have been accorded numerous biological functions however, the effects of feeding a western diet (diet rich in cholesterol and fat) on skin phenotypes, and color is not known. Here, we observed that chronic high-fat and high-cholesterol diet intake in a mouse model of atherosclerosis (ApoE−/−) decreases the level of ceramides and glucosylceramide. At the expense of increased levels of lactosylceramide due to an increase in the expression of lactosylceramide synthase (GalT-V). This is accompanied with neutrophil infiltration into dermis, and enrichment of tumor necrosis factor-stimulated gene-6 (TSG-6) protein. This causes skin inflammation, hair discoloration and loss, in ApoE−/− mice. Conversely, inhibition of glycosphingolipid synthesis, by D-threo-1-phenyl-2-decanoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol (D-PDMP), unbound or encapsulated in a biodegradable polymer (BPD) reversed these phenotypes. Thus, inhibition of glycosphingolipid synthesis represents a unique therapeutic approach relevant to human skin and hair Biology.

  • Thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4) is known to induce hair growth and hair follicle (HF) development; however, its mechanism of action is unknown. We generated mice that overexpressed Tβ4 in the epidermis, as well as Tβ4 global knockout mice, to study the role of Tβ4 in HF development and explore the mechanism of Tβ4 on hair growth. To study Tβ4 function, we depilated control and experimental mice and made tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). To explore the effect of Tβ4 on hair growth and HF development, the mRNA and protein levels of Tβ4 and VEGF were detected by real-time PCR and western blotting in control and experimental mice. Protein expression levels and the phosphorylation of P38, ERK and AKT were also examined by western blotting. The results of depilation indicated that hair re-growth was faster in Tβ4-overexpressing mice, but slower in knockout mice. Histological examination revealed that Tβ4-overexpressing mice had a higher number of hair shafts and HFs clustered together to form groups, while the HFs of control mice and knockout mice were separate. Hair shafts in knockout mice were significantly reduced in number compared with control mice. Increased Tβ4 expression at the mRNA and protein levels was confirmed in Tβ4-overexpressing mice, which also had increased VEGF expression. On the other hand, knockout mice had reduced levels of VEGF expression. Mechanistically, Tβ4-overexpressing mice showed increased protein expression levels and phosphorylation of...
