A Historic Transition in the Making
In a move that marks a significant shift in Luxembourg's monarchy, Prince Guillaume is all set to ascend the throne this Friday, taking over from his father, Grand Duke Henri. This event, the first change of monarch in a quarter-century, is being commemorated with a series of captivating portraits.

The Maison du Grand-Duc has commissioned a talented trio of artists to capture the essence of this momentous occasion. Luxembourgish painter Roland Schauls and British portraitists Louise Pragnell and Andrew Gow have been entrusted with the task of immortalizing the future Grand Duke Guillaume. Louise's artistic prowess is also evident in her portrayal of the future Grand Duchess, Stephanie de Lannoy, who is depicted in a stunning cornflower blue ensemble, exuding elegance and grace.
A Visual Legacy
Three of these portraits will find their place in the official collection at the Grand Ducal Palace, while another portrait of the future Grand Duke will be displayed in the Chamber of Deputies. The public will have the opportunity to view these works of art at the National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art (MNAHA) in January 2026, once the series is complete.
The Royal Abdication Ceremony
But here's where it gets controversial... Grand Duke Henri will officially sign the Act of Abdication, a symbolic gesture of relinquishing power. His son, Prince Guillaume, will then be sworn in at the Chamber of Deputies, followed by a balcony appearance at the Grand Ducal Palace. The government will host a reception, and the evening will culminate in a grand gala dinner at the palace. A true celebration of the new era!
A Weekend of Royal Celebrations
The festivities continue over the weekend. On Saturday, the new Grand Duke will engage in various official duties across several cities. In the evening, their Royal Highnesses will witness a spectacular drone show and attend a concert in the capital. The following day, the Grand Ducal family is expected to attend a service at Notre Dame Cathedral, invited by the Archbishop.
Meet the Future Grand Duke Guillaume
Prince Guillaume, the son of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, has an interesting lineage. He has four siblings, and his father's ascension to the throne in 2000 was a result of his grandmother, Grand Duchess Charlotte's, abdication. Guillaume's wife, Stephanie de Lannoy, belongs to the House of Lannoy, a Belgian noble family, and together they raise their young sons, Prince Charles and Prince François.
