Intel's upcoming 'Diamond Rapids' Xeon 7 processors are set to revolutionize server performance with a focus on memory bandwidth. In a recent announcement, Intel revealed a strategic shift in their product lineup, discontinuing the 8-channel designs in favor of 16-channel SKUs. This decision is a significant advantage for Intel customers, as the increased memory bandwidth will elevate performance across various workloads. The 'Diamond Rapids' platform is designed to be more accessible, catering to a diverse range of customer needs and use cases. The new processors will utilize 'Panther Cove' P-cores, pushing core density to new heights and expected to launch in the second half of 2026. The top-end Xeon 7 SKU will boast an impressive 192 P-cores, divided into four 48-core tiles, offering unparalleled processing power. However, it's important to note that the initial Panther Cove server chips will not include simultaneous multithreading, a feature that will be reintroduced in the 'Coral Rapids' family, ensuring Hyper-Threading for datacenter workloads. Furthermore, Intel's 'Diamond Rapids' processors will introduce the second generation of MRDIMMs (Multiplexer Rank Dual Inline Memory Modules), marking an upgrade from the first generation used in the Xeon 6 family. This advancement will enable transfer rates of 12,800 MT/s, a 45% increase from the previous 8,800 MT/s, and expand the number of memory channels to 16, providing an additional boost in bandwidth. MRDIMMs enhance data transfer rates by connecting multiple memory ranks using a multiplexer, ensuring efficient data buffering and command handling without signal degradation.
