Cameron Jones' Wild Ride: From Wildcard to Champion | 2025 Life Time Grand Prix (2025)

Cameron Jones' Wild Ride to Victory: A Gravel Grinding Tale

It all came down to this: Cameron Jones, a wildcard entry, staring down the barrel of the 2025 Life Time Grand Prix. What was on the line? Everything. Let's dive into the thrilling journey that led him to the top.

Jones' path to glory began with a bold move, risking it all for a wildcard entry. His gamble paid off spectacularly at Unbound Gravel 200, where he clinched the win. But he didn't stop there. He followed up with another victory at Little Sugar MTB, rocketing him to second place on the series leaderboard. Talk about momentum!

Now, heading into the Big Sugar Classic, the final race of the series, Jones knew the stakes. To secure the overall title, he simply had to finish ahead of his three main rivals. The competition was fierce: He was neck and neck with Simon Pellaud, just one point behind three-time series champion Keegan Swenson, and a single point ahead of Torbjørn Andre Røed. The pressure was on!

"I'd done all the numbers so I knew who I had to beat and couldn't see any of them in front of me in the finish. So yeah, do what I had to do," Jones shared with Cyclingnews after finishing fifth at Big Sugar in Bentonville, Arkansas. This shows his strategic mindset and the meticulous planning that went into his race.

But here's where it gets interesting. The race organizers announced a course shortening due to severe weather, cutting the distance from 100 miles to 53.9 miles. Did this throw Jones off? Not at all. He adapted, demonstrating his ability to stay focused under pressure. "I wasn't too concerned to hear the shorter course," he explained, "And I feel like I was as aggressive as anyone there."

Jones' aggressive tactics were evident. He made several strategic moves, trying to shake up the competition. "I was pretty aggressive as well, made a good few moves of my own, and that kind of ended up bringing back most of the groups, apart from the two Matts up the road, who, yeah, no one was catching them," he said. He focused on his key rivals, making their lives as difficult as possible.

"It was pretty hectic for a bit, like I taken my glasses off because they were, like, sweaty, and I dusted up. And yeah, you just, like, squinting, trying to see through the spray of the person in front of you. Yeah, kind of calm down a bit before the finish." Jones described the intense conditions, showing his determination to push through the challenging race environment.

He strategically positioned himself at the front before the hills and the final sprint. "Then I just made sure I was positioned at the front before any of the hills and up there towards the front, so going into the sprint. And then once I launched it, I was just trying to think about what was on the line. And went as deep as I could to the end."

His bike setup was also key to his success. Jones rode a Scott Addict Gravel RC with a 2026 color-way, a 50-tooth chainring, Schwalbe G-One RX PRO 50 tires (50mm front, 45mm rear), and, according to him, approximately 23psi in the front and 26psi in the back. He also used a long, low stem with an aero cockpit and sprint shifters under his bike computer. "Might as well be as efficient as possible," he stated, even using a time trial position on the less technical course.

In the end, Jones crossed the finish line in fifth place, a bit over four minutes behind the race winner. More importantly, he finished ahead of Pellaud, Røed, and Swenson. The wildcard had become a champion, earning a $20,000 US check and a portion of the $200,000 prize money. Talk about a return on investment!
